Those egotistical German botanists

I was looking for German botanical journals, when I came across this American one: Botanical Gazette Vol 15 No. 1 Jan 1890.

In the editorial comments, it reads: "Doubtless there are still instances of young men who spend a year or two in German laboratories, imbibe their egotism along with their methods, and then return with the purpose of enlightening us, but these cases are becoming fewer and must presently disappear" (20)

It sounds as if there is a wee bit of rivalry between the Americans and Germans in the field of botany. This could also stem from the larger rivalry between the new world and the old war. Or it could be a perception European snobbishness on the part of the Germans. These however, are all my own speculations....

It also indicated a tradition of going to German to study at the hands of other botanists. Considering Alexander Humboldt, one of the great naturalists during the 19th century, was German, perhaps this isn't too far fetched.
